Scott is the Founder of The Forest Trust, a keen hiker and an avid supporter of the Movember movement. For the past couple of years he's embarked on a physical challenge in the Jura mountains during the months of November to bring visibility to men's health, raise some funds and spend some active outdoor time with others. In 2016 he challenged himself to hike from Lake Geneva to the summit of La Dôle five times which is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest. And this year? Nothing less than hiking 6 marathons! Up La Dôle he hikes and back down to Lake Geneva. And this through whatever weather and conditions November throws his way.
Last week I joined Scott on part of his Wednesday hike. I found myself joining the group in Gingins. At this point he'd already warmed up with 2 hours of hiking from the Colovray Sport Center where he'd been accompanied by a couple of regulars and some newcomers. Some stayed on, others bid us farewell, and off we went on the second leg of Scott's trek. Everyone was in high spirits, happy to be hiking on such a beautiful day.
Chitchatting with some of the other hikers I discovered that some were regulars joining Scott every week, others had flown in to take part and yet others were first-timers like myself. Scott has made this not only about Movember but about creating an opportunity to be active and talk. Talk with other blokes about whatever but talk.
I usually head into the Jura mountains with women as part of what I do at SHEzone and we'll often get comments about how much talking, as well as hiking, goes on. Instinctively women use talking to find the commonality which leads to creating shared experience and community. And community ensures support. It was great experiencing some of the same here with Scott and his fellow hikers, which hasn't always been my experience when being involved in outdoor adventuring with guys. Rather than everyone puffing their chests out and rattling off all the summits they'd climbed in guise of an introduction, I found myself exploring the nutritional value of trail mix and exchanging parenting values. In other words, connecting and building community.
Before I knew it, it was time to leave Scott and the guys summit La Dôle while I continued on to La Barillette and down to St-Cergue to return to my to-do list for the day. No sore feelings from Scott as he wants to welcome as many to join as they can, whether they have a few hours to hike or strength to hike it all with him.
That means you too! And you don't have to be a dude to join him and share in his adventure. And I have a contest for those of you who go hike with Scott or donate to his Movember page! Check out the information below to take part.
